The American Curl is a very cute, unique-looking cat. They were developed in California in 1981 by a couple who found a stray kitten with back-curling ears, a result of a natural mutation. They crossed this cat with a Domestic Shorthair to replicate this distinctive trait, resulting in this popular, newer breed.
American Curls are medium-sized, from 8 to 11 lbs., with stocky bodies, round heads, and expressive, walnut-shaped eyes. Their coats come in various colors and patterns, and can be either shorthaired or longhaired, but with little undercoat, the coat lays flat and is easy to maintain. The backward-curled ears do require weekly attention to keep them clean. They are an extremely healthy and hardy breed, due to extensive out-crossing to broaden the gene pool of this special breed.
The American Curls are social, playful and loving, often showing their affection by licking your face or kissing your nose. These curious, intelligent kitties are very loyal, and will follow you around the house. They are not very talkative, and tend to softly chirp or trill, rather than meow. These are good-natured kitties that really love children, and are great with other pets; with their unique looks and appealing personality, the American Curl is hard to resist.
