The American Shorthair is one of the top ten most- popular cat breeds in the world. These cats are descended from English Domesticated Cats, and were recognized by the Cat Fanciers Association in 1906. They were once known as Domestic Shorthairs, but were renamed in 1966 to better represent their uniquely American character.
The American Shorthair is robustly built and impressively strong. The males can weigh anywhere from 11 to 15 pounds, and the females from 8 to 12 pounds. These kitties come in more than eighty different colors and patterns, and their eye color can vary, too. Their coat is low-maintenance, needing grooming just once a week, and they are healthy cats, living up to 20 years of age.
The American Shorthair’s popularity stems from its many positive qualities. They are gentle, quiet kitties who enjoy family activities, but are fine when left alone, too. They make excellent playmates for children, tolerate dogs well, and are an easygoing, wonderful pet for any family.
